Controlled
anger served its client well
John (not his real name) was
employed as an accountant in a busy finance and investment
company and he enjoyed the challenges of his job, in fact he
took great pleasure in it. His working
relationships with clients, management and other workers was fine.
His family and social life was stable and enjoyable. Life
was good.
A change in management saw
John become more short tempered with other colleagues.
His family and social life were being consumed by
aggravating stories
about this work. Soon his family and social life
suffered and friends started to drop off. After a
while John seemed to think the whole world was against
him. He became snappy, work colleagues avoided him and
he wasn't invited out to parties and barbeques as he once
was. The relationships he was having with others
suffered. He was feeling quite
depressed from time to time. He had put on weight
and his blood pressure was up.
Individual anger management sessions
helped John with his problem. John's perceptions of
the world changed and he now enjoys his work
more, work colleagues are talking to him again and he is catching up with friends and his family life has
improved. Why? John learned not to avoid his
anger, handle his distrust-based anger and realised that he
was very much in control of work, family and social
commitments.
This short
story demonstrates that anger can effect many areas of our
lives - work, family, social and health!
Identifying
the various types of anger together with an appropriate
treatment methodology is essential.
The positive side of effective
anger management is improved relationships at home, work and play. This has a positive effect on a
person's self-esteem which feeds positively back into the
person's life. Oh, by the way, he no longer feels
depressed, his blood pressure and weight are down and he is
working toward a pay rise and promotion.
